Evolution and Adoption of Quantum Computing Figures of Merit
Abstract:
Figures of merit used to assess quantum computer performance are numerous and heterogeneous. Despite more than two decades of development, no clear consensus has emerged on which individual figure of merit, or combination of figures, best characterizes the performance of a quantum computer. This lack of consensus partly reflects the diversity of quantum computing architectures, whose strengths and limitations may take different forms and involve competing performance dimensions, such as execution speed and operation quality. The adoption of figures of merit is also shaped by factors beyond technical validity, including architecture dependence, reproducibility, data accessibility, commercial incentives, technological sovereignty, customer requirements, and standardization efforts. This presentation examines how quantum computing figures of merit have been created, promoted, adopted, modified, and sometimes abandoned by actors of the quantum ecosystem. It aims to determine whether an emerging convergence is taking place around a shared set of key indicators for evaluating quantum computer performance.
