Benchmarking Quantum-HPC Systems: Japan’s Testbeds and Standardization Initiative
Abstract:
Quantum benchmarks often focus on individual processors, but practical applications depend on hybrid workflows combining CPUs, GPUs, QPUs, middleware, schedulers, and large-scale classical resources. This presentation introduces Japan’s approach to benchmarking complete Quantum-HPC systems. Q-STAR identifies industry use cases and evaluation needs. AIST’s G-QuAT and ABCI-Q support experiments across multiple quantum technologies, while RIKEN’s JHPC-quantum studies close quantum–supercomputer integration. Quantum chemistry using QSCI, also called SQD, illustrates such workflows. Japan is also preparing an IEC/ISO proposal on middleware requirements, including interfaces, hardware abstraction, metrics, metadata, provenance, and result reporting, to enable fair and reproducible system comparisons worldwide across testbeds.
